On Sunday – Meet at the Plymouth Ferryport where we catch the 1645 sailing to Spain. A 2-berth cabin is provided and upgrades are available as detailed in Essentail Information. Our Guide, Paul Burley, will meet you in the Terminal Building at Plymouth Ferryport. We will be setting off from Plymouth and crossing the English Channel towards the Ushant on the north western tip of France.
Monday – As we sail across the English Channel we will be looking for cetaceans and migratory sea birds. It is during this time we would hope to see Common Dolphins, Harbour Porpoise and Minke whale. As we head across the Channel towards the Bay of Biscay. This is an interesting time for birders as we will be looking for Shearwaters, Skuas and Petrels.
The next morning we find ourselves in the north of the bay. For the next seven hours we will again be looking for cetaceans and Pelagics. Only this time we will also be searching for Fin whales, Cuvier’s beaked whale, Pilot whales, Striped dolphins, Risso’s dolphin, Bottlenose dolphins and more.
Tuesday- Javier joins us as we leave the hotel and drive through the impressive Hermida gorge. Then on to Fuente Dé where we take the cable car to the upper mountains. In search for one of the most sought after birds, the beautiful Wallcreeper. During our search for the Wallcreeper we will be looking for Alpine accentor, Yellow billed chough, Cantabrian Chamois, Griffon vultures and the incredible Bearded vulture. After spending many hours birding in the area we return to our hotel for our evening meal.
Wednesday – Today we visit the area of the Milinary chestnuts, near the villages of Pendes and Cabanes on the south side of the Picos de Europa national Park. One of the least known birding places in the Picos de Europa. With meadows and scrub land it is a great place to observe Middle spotted woodpecker, Rock bunting, Blue rock thrush, Alpine swift and reptiles such as the impressive Occelated lizard. It is also a fantastic place for raptors. As the large south facing walls of the mountain make this the home range for Golden eagle, Griffon vulture, Short toed eagle, Booted eagle and the majestic Bearded vulture. This is an area of great scenic beauty in the heart of the Picos de Europa. After our days birding we once more return to our hotel for our evening meal.
Thursday – Today we leave our hotel and make a short trip to the area around the small coastal town of San Vincente de la Barquera. Where we will have a short birdwatch before heading to Santander for our return across the Bay of Biscay to England where we will once again be looking for cetaceans and birds.
Friday – Today we hope to see good numbers of Pelagics and cetaceans as we sail through the Ushant and on towards England. We reach Plymouth at 1115 on Friday.
