Our visit to Portugal is as much 10 day holiday as it is a Wine Tour. We’ve tried to balance the two objectives into an interesting ride across this part of Iberia to make a unique travel experience for our guests.

We’ll be staying at a 4* hotel on the river at Peso da Regua. Returning home we’ll stop for a couple of nights at one of the most attractive cities in Spain, the outstanding Salamanca .

On the first day we pick as indicated below and travel to Plymouth to take the 1645 cruise ferry to Santander, Spain. A 2-berth cabin is provided and dinner is laid on that evening. The ship offers many facilties including live entertainment thoughout the voyage.

On Monday continue to enjoy the cruise and we’ll reach Spain at 1400 (local time). After disembarkation we travel southwards and rather then spend a hotel night en route we’ll get to Peso da Regua in Portugal mid-evening. Where the time is like ours  and check into the 4* Hotel Regua Douro for five nights. Dinner will be latish!

On Tuesday you can relax this morning and get over the journey. Explore the small town, relax by the pool on the riverside and in the afternoon. We’ll make a ride across the river and go up to Lamego to sample some of Portugal’s best sparkling wines at Caves Raposeira. Afterwards we will visit the famous Sanctuary of Nossa Senora dos Remedios before returning to the hotel for dinner.

This Wednesday morning sees us boarding the train (hopefully the one with the steam loco) to travel along the single track railway to the little town of Pinhåo. It’s station is decorated with azulejos (pictorial tiles for which Portugal is renowned). Here we’ll meet up with the coach and drive to Quinta da Avessada for a reception and tastings followed by lunch. We return along the river bank by road to the hotel for a free evening.

On Thursday we set off to visit Amarante a  lakeside town by the River Tamega. We have a tasting at Caves de Cerca. Then there’ll be time for sightseeing before we continue to Aveleda near Penafiel. We will have a tasting then lunch and finally a guided visit of the estate . We return to Regua for a free evening.

Our first Friday  visit is to Quinta do Vallado for a fine wine tasting. We’ll then cross the river again to taste at Quinta Pacheca followed by lunch on the premises. We then return to the hotel for more relaxation and a free evening.

On Saturday we leave the hotel and our final tasting in Portugal will be at Sandeman’s largest vineyard in Portugal. Afterwards settle back as we drive southwards to the border at Guardia. Then head northwards to the beautiful city of Salamanca and check into the Hotel Crisol Regio at Santa  Marta de Tormes, just outside the city for two nights. It has a swimming pool and restaurant where we’ll have dinner.

On Sunday morning we’ll take you into the city for a Guided walk and then you’ll have all day to explore Salamanca at your own pace. The coach will return in the mid-afternoon to take you back to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

On Monday we leave after breakfast. Drive northwards to Santander where we’ll take the 1600 sailing to England. We will have our final dinner on board.

We arrive at Plymouth on Tuesday at 1115 and the coach will return to the original pick up points.
