The Loire, France 9 days
The Loire is like a siren call to most Britons and it’s easy to see why. Lovely old villages, imposing castles and manor houses, pleasant countryside, the ever-present river and of course – fine food and drink!< We’ve been sending travellers to the region for more years than we care to remember and the experience is always well received. This year we are making it a 2-centre trip starting in Sancerre and then moving up to Saumur.
Saturday - We’ll sail from Portsmouth to St Malo and a cabin will be provided.
Sunday - Arriving at 0800 on the second day we make our way southwards through Brittany and into the Loire region. We’re heading for Sancerre, a charming little town that sits on a hill overlooking acres of vineyards. Our hotel is the 3* Panoramic and we’ll stay here for 3 nights. Dinner is taken next door at the Restaurant Les Augustins. All the travelling from now on is minimal.
Monday We leave in the morning and travel southwards to Pouilly sur Loire where we have a presentation at the Tourist Office which houses a small museum and afterwards we have a tasting with them. There will be time to stroll the village and then we’ll go to the Restaurant Le Coq Hardi for lunch. Travelling back to Sancerre we visit Michel Redde for a tasting and then continue for a free evening in Sancerre.
Our Tuesday visit and tasting is a few miles away at Crezancey at the small vineyard La Gemiere. We return to Sancerre for lunch time sightseeing and relaxing before our afternoon visit to Pougny and another excellent small vineyard owned by Daniel Millet. We return to the hotel for dinner.
On Wednesday we leave the hotel and have a visit to the troglodyte cave of Domaine de la Perriere before continuing our journey northwards. We reach Tours and will park in the centre for some sightseeing. We now resume our journey and will stop in Bourgeuil to visit and taste at Domaine des Vallettes before continuing to Saumur and the Hotel Adagio where we stay for three nights. Dinner at the hotel tonight.
Thursday - This morning we drive to Savennieres just outside Angers for a visit to Domaine du Closel. Here you’ll be welcomed by Mme de Jessey or her daughter the Vicomtesse de Pontbriand and will be taken for a stroll up the hills through a wood to view the valley. Back at the Chateau you will sample the golden Chenin Blanc and the ruby Anjou-Village wines and then have lunch in the chateau. We return for sightseeing in Saumur and a free evening.
On Friday we have our morning tasting at Gratien Meyer overlooking the rive and afterwards we’ll have some time for more sightseeing in the town and a visit to Distillery Combier. Dinner at the hotel.
On Saturday we’ll drive eastwards past Tours and thus to Vouvray for a visit to Caves de Vouvray. After this tasting we have lunch at Restaurant Le Val Joli and then we’ll head northwards via Le Mans to Ouistreham for the overnight sailing to England.
