One of the most scenic regions of “Green Spain” is the Province of Cantabria, sometimes known as “Switzerland by the sea”. It is a mountainous Province with a legacy of Romanesque churches in isolated spots. There are many forests, some of which house Spain’s remaining wild bears and along the coast are pretty little fishing villages making best use of the superb golden beaches. Also dotted about the region are pre-historic caves and like neighbouring Asturias, dairy farming is a major occupation.
We stay at the excellent 4* Hotel Juan de la Cosa at Santoña which is about 25 miles from Santander. This hotel offers spacious well-appointed rooms and lounge area, free internet access, large bar and coffee shop and indoor swimming pool. With a golden sandy beach right outside the hotel you won’t want to venture too far !
We sail from Plymouth at 1600 on Sunday and enjoy a super minicruise to Santander arriving at 1700 on the second day. We then drive to the 4* Hotel Juan de la Cosa overlooking the vast sandy Berria beach where we will stay for three nights. After checking in we will have dinner .
On Tuesday we set off for Castro Urdiales, a very pleasant resort and fishing town near the Basque Border. You’ll have plenty of time to visit the town centre and then meander around the harbour with its bars, restaurants and cafes.
We leave in the afternoon and before returning to the hotel we’ll stop in Santoña for a little sightseeing in the town centre.
On Wednesday we set off to the edge of the Picos de Europa mountain range travelling up the Besaya Valley to Reinosa for a short stop then across the Ebro Dam to the stunning Pas Valley and the descent towards the coast. We make a sightseeing stop at the small spa village of Puente Viesgo on the way back to the hotel.
We leave the hotel on Friday morning and travel to Santander , stopping first at the Eroski Hypermarket then into Santander itself for sightseeing. Finally it’s back to the Ferryport to catch the 1900 sailing to England. We reach Plymouth at 1800 on the sixth day.
