This region is another stunningly scenic part of Green Spain and carries on where Cantabria leaves off. Rolling meadows, orchards, wooded reservations, criss crossed by streams and rivers and looming behind the coast is the Cantabrican Cordillera on which sits the Picos de Europa range , the first sighting of Europe for the returning Spanish explorers of years gone by .
All along the coast are rugged outcrops or little rivers coming down from the mountains dividing the golden beaches.
Our base is the welcoming 3* Hotel Mirador de la Franca sitting in solitary splendour overlooking a sandy beach which gives out to the Atlantic Ocean at its entrance. Comfortable rooms, good food and a friendly welcome is the basic requirement from any hotel and the Sordo family offer that in good measure to their guests.
We set off from Bath and pick up as indicated below en route to Plymouth. Here we catch the 1630 sailing to Santander. When we land in Spain on Monday at 1300 we drive out of the city and westwards to the Province of Asturias. We resume our drive in the mid-afternoon and will reach the hotel after about 30 minutes and will check in for three nights .

We’ll stop here and you can wander around its cobbled back streets or enjoy refreshment by the river. For those who are interested in a cable car ride, the coach will continue up the mountain to Fuente Dé where the cable car takes them to the plateau above.
On Wednesday we drive to a famous Spanish heritage site, Covadonga. This is one of Spain’s most important heritage site set in the lower foothills of the Picos de Europa, the main feature being the imposing basilica and the last resting place of Menendez Pelayo, a national hero. We’ll return to Cangas de Onis, an old Roman town where we have laid on a special tapas lunch to encourage you to embrace the civilized Spanish culinary lifestyle. Finally today we travel to Llanes on the coast for a stroll in the old town and harbour area.
We leave on Thursday and travel to Santillana del Mar, another important heritage site. We continue into Santander, stopping at the Hypermarket and then by the town centre for you to have some final sightseeing before we catch the 1500 sailing to England.
