BELGIUM
Ostend/Bruges 3 days
Many years ago, in less affluent times and before being able to hop on a plane to some exotic destination for next to nothing, many Britons enjoyed their first Continental experiences on the Belgian Coast at Ostend and all these years later the town still offers the best lively weekend experience in Europe. There's lots to do and everything is geared to having a good time. Fierce competition ensures that prices are within everyone's reach so if you want a fun weekend – look no further!
Friday - We set off early on and drive to Dover where we catch an early afternoon ferry to France. On arrival at Calais we travel northwards to the Belgian border then the last few miles into Ostend.
We 'll be staying at the Hotel Empire on Van Iseghamlaan, a comfortable hotel near the sea front which is accessible to all the action. After checking in, the rest of the day is yours to begin making the most of the town centre. There are scores of friendly bars and many offer typical saloon-type entertainment with sing-a-longs encouraged in many. For the night owls there are also nightclubs and the Casino is a popular location which in addition to gaming also offers dancing from time to time. Restaurants come in all types ranging from local cuisine to exotic Asian specialities.
Saturday - We set off this morning to drive inland to the charming city of Bruges, one of Europe's most attractive heritage cities. We'll spend the day and you can wander around at your will. The centre of the city is where everyone gathers but walking through the park from the coach parking you'll stroll by the canal side and maybe fancy a boat trip through the narrow channels. In the late afternoon it's back to Ostend for another fun evening.
Sunday - We leave Ostend after breakfast and head for Calais. We'll stop en route at a tobacco shop and then our final stop will be at Calais to visit the drinks warehouse. We catch the ferry in the mid-afternoon and return to the West.
(The cost includes; travel by executive coach; ferry crossing and two nights hotel accommodation with breakfast and dinner; all rooms have private facilities; excursions as described.)
