We have always had an interesting programme of breaks to Normandy but in the past few years have had to drop the shorter tours because the ferry timings were not conducive to this type of break. However, this year we are resuming our longer holidays to this welcoming Province and we think the format will have something for everyone.
Our base is Bayeux and we’ll be staying at the comfortable Novotel on the outskirts of the town. It’s just a short walk to the centre and we feel sure that you will appreciate the hotel which offers really nice rooms, a small bar, outside swimming pool and lounge area. We will be going out on excursion each day but we have built in plenty of time to relax at your own pace. Rushing around is not what we do!!
We leave Plymouth early on Sunday morning and drive to Poole where we catch the 1230 sailing to Cherbourg. The 4 ¼ hour crossing brings us to Cherbourg and after disembarkation we travel eastwards to Bayeux and check in to the Novotel for four nights. You’ll have time freshen up before dinner at the hotel.
Next day we drive to the centre of the town making a brief stop at the British War Cemetery which is near the hotel. We park near the cathedral and you’ll then have some free time to explore the town of Bayeux on your own. At midday we board the coach and drive eastwards to Port en Bessin, a small fishing village and resort. After sightseeing here we continue driving west to the American Cemetery which you may recall from the opening scenes of “Saving Private Ryan”. We will return to Bayeux with a stop en route to sample the local cider and calvados for which the region is renowned.
On Tuesday we head to the coast to visit Arromanches, a seaside resort made famous by the famous Mulberry Harbours without which the D-Day Landings would not have succeeded. We now travel along the coast past Courseulles and Ouistreham to the famous Pegasus Bridge at Bénouville. A visit to the Museum has been arranged. We return to the hotel in the late afternoon.
We leave the hotel after breakfast on Wednesday morning and drive east to the pretty port and resort of Honfleur. It’s market day today so you’ll be able to join in and soak up the atmosphere of a typical French custom. We leave in the early afternoon and on our way back to Bayeux we stop at the Peace Memorial on the outskirts of Caen to pay a visit in this impressive establishment. Our final stop today is at the Hypermarket near the hotel for essential shopping.
On Thursday we have an early start and drive westwards to Cherbourg to catch the 0930 ferry to England. This reaches Poole at 1330(local time) and after disembarkation the coach returns to the original pick up points.
The cost includes: travel by executive coach; ferry crossing; four nights’ 3* hotel accommodation with buffet breakfast and dinner with wine;all excursions and entrances as described.
